Zimbabwe. For the incentive traveler, it is a dream destination that pairs the magnificence of natural beauty and the awe of seeing elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, zonkeys, and wildebeests in their natural environment.
With its neighbor, Zambia, Zimbabwe shares custody of the spectacular Victoria Falls, the largest sheet of falling water in the world and one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The Zimbabwe side, which encompasses two-thirds of the falls, offers the most classic views and there are several ways to experience them—from hiking paths through Victoria Falls National Park that lead you to viewpoints named Devil’s Cataract, Horseshoe Falls, and Rainbow Falls; from a sunset cruise along the Zambezi River; or from a helicopter high above the spray,
a ride locally referred to as “the flight of angels.”
Impressive herds of elephant and buffalo are attracted to the large number of watering holes in Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve, Hwange National Park—a fact that makes them, perhaps, less elusive than the rest of the animals in the park. Don’t worry, you’ll see them all except maybe rhinoceros.
They’re there, but they like to keep to themselves. (If you’re looking to see rhinos especially, Matobo National Park is your best bet.)
There are 11 national parks in Zimbabwe, all of which offer exceptional wildlife experiences and everything from rustic to luxury accommodations nearby. Zimbabwe might not be the first destination on the list of Africa’s offerings, but it should be!
