Asia Destinations | Myanmar

Key Points for Planners

  • 3 Major Airports service Myanmar
  • English is widely spoken throughout the country
  • E-visas are available for citizens of many countries

After a long period of isolation, Myanmar is open and ready for discovery. The country (once known as Burma) has emerged as a vibrant travel destination with charming innocence and ravishing natural and cultural beauty. Comprised of over 100 separate ethnic groups, and bordered by India, China, Laos, Thailand, and Bangladesh, Myanmar’s culture is one of unending interest and intrigue. The former city of Rangoon, now called Yangon, is the country’s largest where visitors can shop in its busy markets, enjoy its many parks and lakes, and see Shwedagon Pagoda, its famous 6th century “Golden Pagoda”

Key Locations

  • Bagan
  • Yangon
  • Mandalay
  • River Kwai
Bagan, an ancient city in the Mandalay Region that reached its zenith between the 11th and 13th centuries, is emerging as an exciting archaeological destination and one as compelling as Cambodia’s Angkor Wat because of its 2,200 Buddhist temples and pagodas that date back to the Middle Ages. Rugged highlands define Myanmar’s topography but it’s bordered by soft seas and traversed by ribbons of mighty rivers.
Inle Lake is pretty as a picture with its floating gardens and villages that house several local ethnic tribes. For all the romance of the far east, look to Ngapali Beach for secluded tropical beauty and serenity. Myanmar holds one of the world’s greatest, and most famous, train lines: The Burmese Railroad with its bridge over the River Kwai. Visitors can take this exhilarating ride along the famous Gotyeik viaduct, which was once the largest railway trestle in the world.
Planners take note: Myanmar’s major cities now host a number of five star hotels and modern dining establishments. It’s no surprise, given Myanmar’s colonial past, that fine cuisine (with a bit of Asian fusion and flair) is widely available. A number of majestic and beautiful historic mansions in the country provide spectacular settings for group events as well.
