Key Points for Planners

  • Easy access by land, sea, road or air from anywhere in Europe
  • Radisson Blu in Riga has 571 rooms and a conference center to accommodate 2,500.
  • Grand Hotel Kempinski had a luxury renovation in 2017

Latvia is among Europe’s last undiscovered frontiers. Over its 800 years of turbulent history, German knights and Swedish kings of old, alternately pillaged the land and plunged their flags. More recently (and up until 1991), the former Soviet Union occupied this tiny country and its influence is still apparent. Independent since 1991, the country today breezily blends its colorful past with a decidedly modern Nordic sense of cool.

  • Sigulda
Riga, Latvia’s capital city, is an exciting European metropolis at the crossroads of eastern and northern Europe. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site where gothic spires and medieval charm coexists easily with the world’s finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture. The Old World flexes its muscles here, too—15th century buildings, town squares, and the Riga Castle are among its many Instagram-worthy sites.
Surprising to some, there is an innovative restaurant scene in Riga. The city is abuzz with good bistros, cafes, and hipster pubs that serve local brews and cocktails. Make sure to try the country’s famous Riga Black Balsam liqueur, a potent elixir made from 24 different plants, roots, and spices, invented by a Latvian pharmacist in the mid-18th century. It was said to be a miracle cure for everything from malaria to sword wounds. Catherine the Great reportedly fell ill during a visit to Riga and was successfully treated with the elixir. (Just something to keep in mind.)
Activities outside of the city center are plentiful and range from hiking in Latvia’s natural beauty to extreme off-road adventures in the wild forests and steep sand dunes out of town. Latvia also has one of the best bobsled teams in the world. The track in Sigulda offers a high-speed bobsled experience that is among the few in the world open to non-professionals.
