Porto is best known for its most famous export—port wine—and a rich cultural heritage that combines ancient churches and modern architecture, Porto is humble, honest, authentic and genuine. Full of pretty shops, historic alleyways, magnificent architecture, and modern restaurants, Porto is a relaxed city with a strong cultural identity. Not to be outdone by port, Madeira is known for its famous wine and the vineyards once tended by Jesuit priests. But there’s so much more…The island’s crystal clear waters invite dive enthusiasts and dolphin watchers alike.
Its beautiful blue, sunny skies entice adventurous paragliders to Calheta to play with the birds. Land lovers trek along the famous levadas, explore the Laurisilva Forest (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), or Jeep-journey to hidden mountain vistas. Lisbon is a city of seven hills with spectacular views overlooking the River Tagus. Its labyrinthine streets are lined with terracotta-roofed buildings and treasures, like São Jorge Castle and its iconic bridge, invite discovery. But perhaps the city’s greatest treasures are its historic neighborhoods themselves: Baixa, the city’s downtown, contains many of the city’s architectural wonders from ages long past.
Rossio Square, Lisbon’s cultural epicenter, is home to a wide array of shops, galleries and fine restaurants. Alfama is a delightful maze of narrow streets, which lead from the Tejo estuary uphill to the castle. There is much to explore here. And all to the soulful sound of traditional fado music, which floats through the city’s neighborhoods like a breeze. Portugal is also the gateway to the gorgeous Azores. Legend has it that the beautiful islands of the Azores are actually the mountaintops of the lost continent of Atlantis. The climate is temperate year-round, perfect for golf, sailing, diving, tennis, hiking, and other active pursuits.
