Slovakia may be less famous than its former partner, The Czech Republic, but it is every bit as lovely and captivating. In addition to its many charms, Slovakia is also a short day trip away from Vienna, its neighbor to the west. And if its capital city, Bratislava, looks familiar, it’s because many filmmakers have used it as a stand-in for downtown Vienna, due to the fact that it is much quainter. (Shhh! Let’s not say it too loudly, we wouldn’t want to upset Austria.)

Bratislava is so much more than its adorable old town. It’s a city offering everything a good European destination travel professional wants—palpable history, rich culture, myriad opportunities for recreation, plenty of lodging, and enough food options to satisfy those who aren’t adventurous eaters. There are many European-style restaurants here and traditional Slovakian cuisine-potato dumplings served with cheese and roasted bacon, pierogies, goulash, schnitzels, potato pancakes-is a meat and potato lover’s dream.
Set along the Danube River by the border with Austria and Hungary, Bratislava is surrounded by vineyards and the Little Carpathian mountains, crisscrossed with forested hiking and cycling trails. The pedestrian-only, 18th-century old town is known for its lively bars and cafes. Perched on a hill above the city, the reconstructed Bratislavia Castle overlooks old town and the Danube.

Inexpensive by comparison to the rest of Europe, Slovakia is small enough to manage a short stay with enough charm to sustain a longer one.
