Spain

Tapas and toreadors. Paella and Picasso. The flamenco. Like its famous sangria, Spain is a refreshing combination of tradition and a lust for life. It’s biggest cities, Barcelona and Madrid, are a mecca for travelers who like a laid-back pace to their days and a robust party at night—a siesta before the fiesta, if you will. Like so many European cities, Barcelona is a blend of ancient and modern.

Key Locations

  • Cordoba

Catalan Gothic buildings, a medieval style characterized by sharply pointed spires, intricate sculptures, and flying buttresses share space with Modernisme style buildings. You’ll find Antoni Gaudi’s Modernisme masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia, here, an unfinished work of architectural expressionism that must be seen to be believed. Barcelona offers excellent hotels and an internationally famous nightlife ranging from sophisticated clubs to easy going bars on Las Ramblas.

Situated at a higher altitude than any other European capital, Madrid is a city of wide avenues, stylish shops, excellent restaurants, and a range of grand hotels—several of which offer extensive conference facilities. Museums and art galleries abound for the visitor with a cultural frame of mind, while those with a lighter outlook cannot fail to be impressed by the nightlife with music ranging from disco to classical Spanish Flamenco.

Many groups head south to the Costa Del Sol for sunshine and sangria. Once a series of sleepy fishing villages, the “Sun Coast” is reminiscent of Southern California in climate, scenery, and raw coastal beauty. Malaga and Marbella are the main cities here. Plentiful golf resorts on the Mediterranean and easy day trips to Seville, Granada, Cordoba, and Gibralter provide enough variety to suit the most varied of travel tastes.
